Radio NZ’s Arts on Sunday programme covered our recent public meeting which invited the local sector to help us co-create the creative ecology model we are developing.
Justin Gregory talks to key researcher Elise Sterback, as well as CC board members Candy Elsmore and Charlie McDermott, amongst other attendees at the meeting (Michael Hurst, Q theatre, etc.)

I think a group like Creative Coalition operates in a very interesting and very important space within the public sphere. The divide between government and the people it serves is getting increasingly wider due to its complexity. CC, in its conduit role between the two, can help to filter information from government through to those whose lives it affects, and report back to help government understand the needs of the sector in a more meaningful way. As a recent graduate, I am very aware of the pull overseas. Despite this, I feel strongly rooted in Auckland and I’m excited about how I can contribute to the creative sector here as it continues to evolve. Auckland seems to be in a unique position - its creative sector is relatively young, but there appears to be a strong appetite within the city to provide increasing support and exposure to creative activities and ideas. I look forward to working with CC to ensure these developments are carried out hand-in-hand with the sector at all the levels that make up its creative ecology.

Vibracorp's Creative Peeps Podcast Series

I’ve begun a new podcast series called “Creative Peeps” that talks to the people behind creative happenings in Auckland. Already, I’ve talked to some very talented individuals, such as artists and organisers involved with events like ArtWeek and Art in the Dark, as well as those producing and curating their own exhibitions.

My role at The BizDojo has recently changed with the opening of our new venue and co-working artist studio BizDojo Makerspace at 155 K’Road. Myself and Laura Smith will be co-managing the space and programming a number of events and workshops.

Our first initiative is a concept called Co.Create Week, which turns the space into a curated working environment for makers from a certain industry - bringing in mentors and suppliers to connect and advise as people work in the space. Co.Create Week: Fashion is on in the space this week, with visits from Jimmy D, Emily Miller-Sharma, Kit Lawrence and Paul Blomfield, among others.

Along with Elisabeth Vaneveld, I assisted in programming this creative sector conference held July 5 in the University of Auckland Business School. Survive & Thrive 2012 spoke to the theme of “We need to talk about the future” and featured a stellar line-up with the likes of Dean Poole (Alt Group), Jason Galeon (Weta Digital), Moana Maniapoto (Moana & The Moa Hunters), Rebecca Mills (Ministry of Green), Coco Solid, Ross Liew (Cut Collective), Tom Sainsbury, and Charlie McDermott (The Basement Theatre), to name a few.

The BizDojo is a co-working space in the Ironbank Building on Krd that I’ve been working from for the last year. The Big Idea brought me there originally to perch on one of their desks, and I got so comfortable there that I set up an HQ for Vibracorp and Creative Coalition, and now I’ve been employed as their Brand and Culture Manager… there’s some very exciting things in the pipeline so watch this space..
